Steven Statton (a very working-class spy) is back, and he is faced with a Hamas plot to potentially kill hundreds of thousands of people. The terrorists are operating on behalf of China, Iran, Russia, and a dissident South African group. The plot is being funded by a shadowy organisation whose members are some of the wealthiest people in the world.​

 

Statton is helped in his efforts to foil the plan by an American CIA agent he thought was dead, and a beautiful Israeli Mossad agent. However, he is hampered by the actions of a traitor in British Intelligence who is passing information to the enemy.​

 

Statton also has to deal with the emotional distractions raised by his relationship with lover Harriet Barratt, and his father, who he discovers is secretly helping to run a covert intelligence operation with the code name Operation Doppelganger.​

 

The action takes place during 2020, with the world already starting to grapple with the Covid-19 pandemic.
